Programming 8-bit PIC Microcontrollers in C: with Interactive Hardware Simulation

By: Martin P. Bates.

PIC Microcontrollers are present in almost every new electronic application that is released from garage door openers to the iPhone. With the proliferation of this product more and more engineers and engineers-to-be (students) need to understand how to design, develop, and build with them. Martin Bates, best-selling author, has provided a step-by-step guide to programming these microcontrollers (MCUs) with the C programming language.

With no previous knowledge of C necessary to read this book, it is the perfect for entry into this world for engineers who have not worked with PICs, new professionals, students, and hobbyists. As MCUs become more complex C is the most popular language due to its ability to process advanced processes and multitasking. RTOSs, that is a need to know for engineers, is also discussed as more advanced MCUs require timing and organization of programming and implementation of multitasking. The book includes lots of source code, circuit schematics, and hardware block diagrams. Microchip's PICDEM Mechatronics board is used to detail the examples throughout the book.

*Focuses on the C programming language which is by far the most popular for microcontrollers (MCUs)
*Features Proteus VSMg the most complete microcontroller simulator on the market, along with CCS PCM C compiler, both are highly compatible with Microchip tools
*Extensive downloadable content including fully worked examples

Microcontroller Programming: An Introduction

By: Syed R. Rizvi.

Microcontroller Programming: An Introduction is a comprehensive one-stop resource that covers the concepts, principles, solution development, and associated techniques involved in microcontroller-based systems. Focusing on the elements and features of the popular and powerful Motorola 68HC11 microcontroller IC as a representative example, this book is unlike others, which are often too broad in scope, delving into every topic of concern regarding microcontroller programmers. Instead, this text concentrates on design, architecture, and development, giving developers the tools to develop solid, effective embedded applications.

Packaged with helpful examples, projects, and illustrations, this book gives an in-depth assessment of microcontroller design programming in both assembly and C. By illustrating the relatively sophisticated 8-bit 68HC11 microcontroller, the author—who is a consultant for NASA—provides a firsthand exploration and demonstration of the languages, tools, and techniques needed to build embedded applications. Readers can then apply their newly acquired skills to program other 8/16/32-bit microcontrollers.

For readers who want to do more than just scrape the surface, this book is an enjoyable and immensely beneficial tool to help them cultivate a deeper understanding of microcontroller-based application development. An extensive supplements package is available free of charge to instructors who use the book for a course.

Microcontrollers: Fundamentals and Applications with PIC

By: Fernando E. Valdes-Perez, Ramon Pallas-Areny.

Microcontrollers exist in a wide variety of models with varying structures and numerous application opportunities. Despite this diversity, it is possible to find consistencies in the architecture of most microcontrollers. Microcontrollers: Fundamentals and Applications with PIC focuses on these common elements to describe the fundamentals of microcontroller design and programming. Using clear, concise language and a top-bottom approach, the book describes the parts that make up a microcontroller, how they work, and how they interact with each other. It also explains how to program medium-end PICs using assembler language.

Examines analog as well as digital signals

This volume describes the structure and resources of general microcontrollers as well as PIC microcontrollers, with a special focus on medium-end devices. The authors discuss memory organization and structure, and the assembler language used for programming medium-end PIC microcontrollers. They also explore how microcontrollers can acquire, process, and generate digital signals, explaining available techniques to deal with parallel input or output, peripherals, resources for real-time use, interrupts, and the specific characteristics of serial data interfaces in PIC microcontrollers. Finally, the book describes the acquisition and generation of analog signals either using resources inside the chip or by connecting peripheral circuits.

Provides hands-on clarification

Using practical examples and applications to supplement each topic, this volume provides the tools to thoroughly grasp the architecture and programming of microcontrollers. It avoids overly specific details so readers are quickly led toward design implementation. After mastering the material in this text, they will understand how to efficiently use PIC microcontrollers in a design process.

Debugging Tools for Atmel Products (ATJTAGICE2)
Debugging Tools for Atmel Products (ATJTAGICE2)Lately microprocessor and microcontroller manufacturers started integrating modules with in-built debugging functions into their new products. These are the on-chip debug tools. A specialised channel for connection to a computer is necessary for the debug functions to work. Testing serial interface of JTAG type is often used as such channel. This is why hardware debug tools based on on-chip debug modules are often called JTAG emulators. The JTAG emulator model JTAGICE2 by Atmel does background debugging of the user program. It supports all AVR microcontrollers with JTAG interface. These include Atmega128, Atmega123, Atmega16 and other models. Program debugging for 8-bit AVR controllers is carried out within the AVR studio integrated programming environment. The programming environment AVR32 studio was designed for 32-bit AVR controllers. Version 2.2 is available from the website of Atmel. The delivery set includes the following:The emulator, a CD with AVR studio and the user manual, an RS232 cable for connecting to a computer, a USB cable for connecting to a computer, a ribbon cable for connecting to the target circuit board, and a cable for an external power supply.JTAGICE2 can emulate all analog and digital functions. It supports simultaneous scanning of several microcircuits through JTAG. It can be connected to a PC with the help of RS232 or USB interfaces. JTAGICE2 fully supports Assembler and high-level languages. It has ...

ARM RealView Microcontroller Development Kit : DigInfo
DigInfo - www.diginfo.tv ARM, based in the UK, exhibited its RealView Microcontroller Development Kit at the Embedded Technology 2008 show. ARM is a company that licenses microprocessor cores to 80% of the world's semiconductor manufacturers. Recently the company released the RealView Microcontroller Development Kit designed to support software development environments. The new kit supports all types of devices equipped with ARM7, ARM9, Cortex-M1, and Cortex-M3 processors and is designed to support developers in semiconductor development and design. The new development kit includes an array of easy to use, developer oriented functions including the RealView Compilation Tool and the Keil μVision IDE debugging tool. With these functions, the kit provides an environment that is optimized for ARM equipped devices. ARM developed the new kit with a built-in Cortex-M3, a new device that replaces the JTAG interface. The Cortex-M3 can access debugging and test functions built into the IC and can verify operations. It is also equipped with a new function called Serial-Wire Debug that uses a 2-pin interface, and when a different pin is used, trace information on interrupt executions and parameter data can be displayed on the screen in real time. This device is now becoming the mainstream.

USER PROGRAMMABLE PASSWORD BASED HOTEL ROOM DOOR LOCK
Model No: 53 The microcontroller based Door locker is an access control system that allows only authorized persons to access a restricted area. The system is fully controlled by the 8 bit microcontroller which has a fixed size of ROM for the storage of program. The password is stored in another dedicated EEPROM and the password can be changed at any time unlike a fixed one burnt permanently on to the microcontroller. A keypad is used to enter the password and Relay is used to lock or unlock the door, indicated by a lamp. Also for any wrong attempt to open the door an indication is given by a lamp. The microcontroller used in the project is of 8051 family which is of 8 bit. The power supply consists of a step down transformer 230/12V, which steps down the voltage to 12V AC. This is converted to DC using a Bridge rectifier. The ripples are removed using a capacitive filter and it is then regulated to +5V using a voltage regulator 7805 which is required for the operation of the microcontroller and other components.
