By: Steve Furber. The future of the computer and communications industries is converging on mobile information appliances - phones, PDAs, laptops and other devices. The ARM is at the heart of this trend, leading the way in system-on-chip (SoC) development and becoming the processor core of choice for many embedded applications. System-on-chip technology is changing the way we use computers, but it also sets designers the very challenging problem of getting a complex SoC design right first time. ARM System-on-Chip Architecture introduces the concepts and methodologies employed in designing a system-on-chip based around a microprocessor core, and in designing the core itself. Extensive illustrations, based on the ARM, give practical substance to the design principles set out in the book, reinforcing the reader's understanding of how and why SoCs and microprocessors are designed as they are. ARM System-on-Chip Architecture: - presents and discusses the major issues of system-on-chip design, including memory hierarchy, caches, memory management, on-chip buses, on-chip debug and production test - provides an overview of the ARM processor family, enabling the reader to decide which ARM is best for the job in hand - describes the ARM and Thumb programming models, enabling the designer to begin to develop applications - covers all the latest ARM products and developments, including StrongARM, the ARM9 and ARM10 series of cores, and the ARM-based SoC components at the heart of Ericsson's Bluetooth technology, the Psion Series 5 PDA and Samsung's SGH2400 GSM handset - includes details on the AMULET asynchronous ARM cores and the AMULET3H asynchronous SoC subsystem ARM System-on-Chip Architecture is an essential handbook for system-on-chip designers using ARM processor cores and engineers working with the ARM. It can also be used as a course text for undergraduate and masters students of computer science, computer engineering and electrical engineering.Book Title: ARM System-on-Chip Architecture (2nd Edition). Flying insects are intelligent micromachines capable of exquisite maneuvers in unpredictable environments. Understanding these systems advances our knowledge of flight control, sensor suites, and unsteady aerodynamics, which is of crucial interest to engineers developing intelligent flying robots or micro air vehicles (MAVs). The insights we gain when synthesizing bioinspired systems can in turn benefit the fields of neurophysiology, ethology and zoology by providing real-life tests of the proposed models. This book was written by biologists and engineers leading the research in this crossdisciplinary field. It examines all aspects of the mechanics, technology and intelligence of insects and insectoids. After introductory-level overviews of flight control in insects, dedicated chapters focus on the development of autonomous flying systems using biological principles to sense their surroundings and autonomously navigate. A significant part of the book is dedicated to the mechanics and control of flapping wings both in insects and artificial systems. Finally hybrid locomotion, energy harvesting and manufacturing of small flying robots are covered. A particular feature of the book is the depth on realization topics such as control engineering, electronics, mechanics, optics, robotics and manufacturing. This book will be of interest to academic and industrial researchers engaged with theory and engineering in the domains of aerial robotics, artificial intelligence, and entomology. By: Jean-Christophe Zufferey. This book demonstrates how bio-inspiration can lead to fully autonomous flying robots without relying on external aids. Most existing aerial robots fly in open skies, far from obstacles, and rely on external beacons, mainly GPS, to localise and navigate. However, these robots are not able to fly at low altitude or in confined environments, and yet this poses absolutely no difficulty to insects. Indeed, flying insects display efficient flight control capabilities in complex environments despite their limited weight and relatively tiny brain size. From sensor suite to control strategies, the literature on flying insects is reviewed from an engineering perspective in order to extract useful principles that are then applied to the synthesis of artificial indoor flyers. Artificial evolution is also utilised to search for alternative control systems and behaviors that match the constraints of small flying robots. Specifically, the basic sensory modalities of insects, vision, gyroscopes and airflow sense, are applied to develop navigation controllers for indoor flying robots. These robots are capable of mapping sensor information onto actuator commands in real time to maintain altitude, stabilize the course and avoid obstacles. The most prominent result of this novel approach is a 10-gram microflyer capable of fully autonomous operation in an office-sized room using fly-inspired vision, inertial and airspeed sensors. This book is intended for all those interested in autonomous robotics, in academia and industry. | Sorry about my dodgy camera work and my west Clare accent!!!!.... This is a short video demonstrating my final year project. The project is basically in two parts: 1. Android application 2. Bluetooth to Infrared converter Brief Explanation: The Android app connects to the micro controller via Bluetooth, when the user presses a button on any of the remotes on the android app, the relevant command for that button press is sent to the micro controller via Bluetooth. The micro controller receives the message sent via Bluetooth and converts the message into an RC-5 protocol which will be outputted on one of the pins of the micro controller which is connected to an Infrared LED, the RC-5 protocol is sent via the Infrared LED to the TV (via line of sight) allowing the command which you had chosen (button press) to be executed!..... | I realized this project using the MCB2300 evaluation board connected to a self developed mini Bluetooth board over UART1. A Thermocouple type-K has been used to measure the temperature using the Max6675 chip which is connected to LPC2378 microcontroller over the SPI-port. Each single reading temperature send simply over the mini blue-tooth to be logged using the PDA. The created temperature data logger software for PDA can display the actual temperature in a numerical digital indicator and as temperature chart/graph with 1024 temperature points. I used Labview 2009 with Labview for ARM to program the LPC2378 microcontroller and Labview 8.5 with PDA-tool kit to create the software for PDA modell XDA-OrbitI. Many thanks to National Instruments for that great job in developing the NI LabVIEW Embedded Module for ARM Microcontrollers tool kit which makes it easy and effective using 32Bits micro-controllers. - Created with AquaSoft SlideShow for YouTube: www.aquasoft.net Video Title: Connecting MCB2300 / LPC2378 microcontroller with PDA over Bluetooth. | This is a small tank robot that I made this weekend. The idea behind it was to completely remove the vex micro controller from the equation and add some new hardware in. I used an arduino diecimila usb board as the brains of the robot, the sensors are all from vex (ultrasonic, and light). The wireless connection is established with a bluesmirf rp-sma from sparkfun.com, it acts as a wireless serial cable to pass data to the arduino and back to the computer. The camera as well as the micro controller are individually powered by separate slim 4.8v battery packs from onlybatterypacks.com. On the software side visual studio.net 2008 was used to program and application to use the W,S,A, and D keys to drive the robot as well as provide sensor data. |
